Mountain Fitness®

Sport is good and at altitude is even better! Scientific data show that doing sport on mountain is three times more tonic for heart, lungs, muscles and mind than doing it on level ground! Walking uphill people burn ten times more calories than walking on level ground.

Mountain Fitness paths are a new way to go walking on mountain; thanks to an algorithm, developed by the Federation for Sport at Altitude, walking on mountain, on Mountain Fitness paths, means being aware about the hiking time and the quantity of calories burned, everything calculated according to the personal age, weight and physical conditions.

On the Mountain Fitness billboards you will find three categories: amateur, trained trekker and athlete. You can also ask Mountain Fitness experts for a free advice (read the last paragraph of this page).


Physiologic data and diet

The consume of calories is calculated considering a constant walk of a medium build person. Walking uphill, a fat person burns more calories than a slim one. On a path, characterized by 30% gradient, a person weighting 85 Kg, burns about 20% more calories than a person weighting 70 Kg. Going downhill people consume the 25-30% of calories that they would consume going uphill. The walking time and the consume of calories are very different according to the different categories, since on level ground an athlete runs, while an amateur walks.

To use the Mountain Fitness paths as an instrument to learn to eat correctly, it is important to know:

1) the calories burned covering a certain path in a certain time

2) usual food and its average calorie intake
