Open House of the BedrettoLab
Come visit the unique research facility and take a walk through the geology of the Alps!
On Saturday, 3 June, you are invited to visit the BedrettoLab. The BedrettoLab (Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies) is a unique research infrastructure run by ETH Zurich making it possible to take a close look at the Earth’s interior. It is located in the Swiss Alps 1.5 kilometres below the surface and in the middle of the 5.2 kilometres long Bedretto tunnel connecting the Ticino with the Furka railway tunnel.
At the BedrettoLab, ETH Zurich studies techniques and procedures for the safe, efficient, and sustainable use of geothermal heat. In doing so, it improves the understanding of earthquake physics and develops and tests new technologies to access the deep underground and monitor its behaviour.
Besides having a look at the state-of-the-art research infrastructures of our laboratory, the Bedretto tunnel offers an exciting chance to explore the deep geology of the Alps.
During the guided tour, you will walk about 5 km (round trip) from the tunnel portal to our laboratory space and back. One tour takes about 2 hours. The tour also includes a safety briefing where you will be equipped with a helmet and a safety vest. Please remember to wear sturdy shoes and a jacket. The temperature in our laboratory is about 15°C.
Interested in discovering the BedrettoLab? Then register here for a guided tour. You can choose between different time slots. The first tour starts at 11 am. The tickets are free of charge. For children, we recommend participation from the age of 6. Children also need a ticket.
We are looking forward to seeing you on June 3 in Bedretto.
